In today’s medical field technology plays a big role when it comes to patient care. Technology is huge when it comes to giving the patient the best type of quality care when they are in the hospital. Mr.Sathees R gained the opportunity to attend a workshop on Medical Innovation, organized by the Medical Innovation Development Center (MIND Center) Under the Center for Excellence Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University on 10th October 2018 at the Center for Innovative Medical Research, Basement Building, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital.

Ramathibodi Hospital  is a university hospital of the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital,Mahidol University. The Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital has three principal regions to serve more than 5,000 out-patients per day. The hospital hosts many medical centers for specialised treatment such as:

  • Advanced Diagnostic Imaging and Imaging-guided Minimal Invasive Therapy Center (AIMC)
  • Cardiovascular and Metabolic Center (CVMC)
  • Queen Sirikit Medical Center (QSMC), serving as a center for advanced projects, e.g., bone marrow transplantation project

Apart from these it also houses modern operating rooms and intensive care units, like the

  • Stem Cell Transplantation Center
  • Minimal Invasive Endoscopic Surgery Center
  • Elderly Care Unit Center
  • Child Development Center
  • Complicated Diseases Services

Mahidol University (MU) is an autonomous research institution in Thailand. Mahidol is among Thailand’s most prestigious universities. There are a total of 629 programsoffered by MU altogether in 17 faculties, 6 colleges, 9 research institutions and 6 campuses.Mahidol University was ranked Thailand’s #1 university in 2011 by QS Asian University Rankings. In 2015, Mahidol University was ranked as one of the world’s top 100 universities at which to study medicine, according to the QS World University Rankings

The mission behind to start the Medical Innovation development center was to provide a service-oriented system to deliver economic and social value. The three essential components were,

  • To educate the next generation of innovators in the design, development, and commercialization of medical technologies through classroom and hands-on experiences in cooperation with the schools of Engineering, Health Sciences, Business, and Law.
  • To provide an organizational structure to link the faculty, clinicians, and students at the University, and to fund early-stage development of innovative biomedical technologies.
  • To facilitate the translation of innovative biomedical technologies into marketable products, services, and business ventures in collaboration with the University.

The workshop was indeed set to initiate a revolutionary change in the field of medicine and technological development. Mr. Sathees Kumar gave a presentation on Design by QR code & RFID technology and smart AI machine for healthcare innovation.”

There are numerous problems faced by the medical world today, many of which needs more care but are neglected for example, improving post- operative care experience, efficient primary care support, etc. These are important, our team realised this and came up with an innovation that will make things more comfortable and easier. The design by QR code & technology and smart AI machine for healthcare innovation, was for one such cause.

A RFID system is made up of two parts: a tag or label and a reader. RFID tags or labels are embedded with a transmitter and a receiver. The RFID component on the tags have two parts: a microchip that stores and processes information, and an antenna to receive and transmit a signal. The tag contains the specific serial number for one specific object.

To read the information encoded on a tag, a two-way radio transmitter-receiver called an interrogator or reader emits a signal to the tag using an antenna. The tag responds with the information written in its memory bank. The interrogator will then transmit the read results to an RFID computer program. This RFID technology is combined with QR coding format.A QR code consists of black squares arranged in a square grid on a white background, which can be read by an imaging device such as a camera, and processed using Reed–Solomon error correction until the image can be appropriately interpreted. The required data is then extracted from patterns that are present in both horizontal and vertical components of the image.

This innovation has helped the medical industry find the solution for various problems like,

  • 24/7 monitoring of and engagements with patients
  • Improves the operational efficiency of the hospital
  • Address the need to rapidly mobilize appropriate staff and resources to respond to unplanned critical events and ensure continuity of operations and patient care durations
  • Detect unauthorized access and disclosures of protected health information to reduce and prevent healthcare fraud and misuses.

Primary care knowledge base, Patient-centric, crisis and incident management, Health assistant Bot, IoT hospitals, Robotics automation, Tablet recognizer, IoT computer vision security, etc are the various applications the design includes to cover up the issues of the medical industry.
